The Icon Machine application can be installed anywhere on your hard disk. The Applications folder is probably easiest.
CarbonLib
If you are using Mac OS 8 or 9, you should make sure you have the latest version of CarbonLib (1.6). To find out what version you have, open the Apple System Profiler from the Apple menu and look at the box labeled "Mac OS overview". To download the latest version, double-click the included "Get CarbonLib" file.
Edit Icon plugins
The two items named "Edit Icon" are contextual menu plugins. Installation depends on which version of the Mac OS you have.
If you are using Mac OS X (10.1 or later):
- Open the Library folder on your hard disk.
..either the one in your Home folder, or the one at the root level
- Make a new folder inside the Library folder, and name it Contextual Menu Items (unless that folder already exists).
- Copy the OS X Edit Icon plugin (the one that looks like a block) into the Contextual Menu Items folder; there is no need to restart.
- If you are replacing an older version, you will need to drag the old copy to the Trash first. Since the old version is still being used by running applications (like the Finder), you will need to log out and log back in again, or otherwise restart the Finder.
If you are using Mac OS 8 or 9:
This plugin has not changed since Icon Machine 2.0.1. If you are upgrading from that version or any newer version, you do not need to reinstall the Edit Icon plugin.
- Drag the Edit Icon plugin (the one that looks like a puzzle piece) onto your System Folder icon.
- A dialog window will appear, asking about moving the item to the Contextual Menu Items folder; click OK.
- Restart your computer.
Once the plugin is installed, you can quickly open any file into Icon Machine by control-clicking on it and selecting "Edit Icon" from the menu that appears.
